I’ve recently stumbled upon an article in one German newspaper about the best “gourmet food” shops in Hamburg. I think it’s good to know where one can get some of the best products.. 🙂 So when you’re in Hamburg, check these out (some of them also have online shops):

London’s Healthy Eating

What is “healthy eating”? Under this term people usually understand that the products are organic, responsibly handled, cooked in a better way – not too fried, not cooked like crazy so there’re no vitamins left, without using too much oil or butter or processed ingredients like white flour/white sugar/refined oils and so on…

So in this post I would like to share where in London one can find those “healthy” food options – usually it’s either in a place that is entirely devoted to this concept, like an organic restaurant/shop or it is a rather expensive place that sources high-quality ingredients, so it’s easy to eat healthy in such a place. Or it might be a dedicated aisle to organic products in a supermarket like Tesco, Waitrose, Sainsbury’s and so on..

Tim’s approach to fitness is based on tons of experiments and makes a lot of sense. The Art of Systems Thinking by Joseph O’Connor & Ian McDermott: a good book that explains why sometimes something doesn’t go as planned or expected, although logically it should: more hard work should bring more positive results, for instance. But usually it’s not so, for the systems are everywhere, and their logic is  different. SIMPLY SOPHISTICATED SNACKING

Just want to share with you some tips about the healthiest snacking ever. (IMO) 😉

Sometimes even health publications and shops advise us to buy different snack bars or packets or crackers – even raw – that are supposedly HEALTHY and have good stuff that our body might need for a snack: fruit, nuts and some other stuff… ??? What? Some other stuff? What stuff? – not really GOOD STUFF… But it’s supposed to be healthy!

Check out the ingredients list of this ‘Superbar‘ for example. Or some other ones here: http://www.healthysupplies.co.uk/snack-bars.html – EXACTLY! I particularly don’t like rice syrup, rice pops, soy pieces in this one; rice starch, rice malt or even grape juice in some others; and still others have even more ‘weird stuff’ in them.

That’s why I don’t buy anything like that from health stores or any other shops actually – cause if you want to eat fruit, fresh fruit is the best option; and if you want to eat nuts – fresh nuts are the best! – not roasted or salted or even pressed into a bar. 🙂

On the other hand, if you’d like a TREAT, the above examples of snacks would work very well – instead of a Kit Kat or a Twix, digestive biscuits or shortbread, have one of those! 😉

BACK TO HEALTHY SNACKS:

I’ve found what works best for me: I usually carry with me a piece of fruit (an apple, a pear or a banana) and a handful of nuts in a small box.

Depending on the size of fruits or for how long I’m going to be away from home, I might consider having two different pieces of fruit and two handful of nuts. And if I’m into preparing stuff, I can even cut the fruit into chunks – so in this case a kiwi and a mango could also be considered, you need to vary your fruit.

Snack: apple+pear+pistachios+sunflower seeds+almonds+pine nuts

Recently I had this snack ->

Apple+pear+nuts: pistachios, almonds, pine nuts and sunflower seeds.

It was YUM!! And quite a lot actually 🙂 I wasn’t hungry for a while after that… For a smaller snack of course one piece of fruit will do.

And again, if you’re taking something with you, you don’t need to cut it to pieces – you can just have a whole fruit and nuts in a box.

Re vegetables, animal products or cooking ingredients.. They are very easy to find in supermarket chains in the organic sections – so I’m not listing them.

Paella-inspired “Agata-style” Rice’n’chicken

Cooked something like that today for the family! =)

Put the chicken into the oven (look for instructions and times on the package), let it bake. 🙂 I drizzled it with olive oil, seasoned with some oregano, salted it and put some garlic on top for the aroma

Cook the vegetables (carrots, beans and pepper): bring the water to boil, put in the vegetables and boil them for 5 minutes. Then take them out, and put the rice into the water that’s left from them (I did it to preserve some of the vitamins that were left in water from vegetables).

Cook the rice for 20 minutes in the water left from vegetables (with some garlic that should be removed after cooking), add more water if necessary.

Then put the rice into vegetables, add tomatoes and more pre-cooked beans, mix it all, add some saffron, salt and pepper and cook it a bit more. I think it would be nice to add some parmesan as well (I forgot to do that, but felt it was lacking).

When the chicken is ready, add some chicken into the mixture, mix well.

Turns out yummy! =)

Changing the Diet

I have made a decision. Finally. To change my diet.

Some of you might think that I have already been leading a ‘healthy lifestyle’ and eating ‘healthily,’ however, that is not entirely true.

I have been ‘trying’ to abstain from eating certain foods, like bread (especially white), pasta, refined rice, sugar, fatty yoghurts or milk, foods with preservatives and colourings, pastries, sweets, milk chocolate and so on…

OK. I never drink fizzy drinks: I just do not like them. I do not drink too much coffee. I do not eat fried foods. That is good.

But very often it was hard for me not to eat the foods that I was ‘trying’ to abstain from. I ended up eating them rather frequently.

Remember me eating only cakes for dinner? 😉 Some people were surprised to hear that I ate something sweet, like a piece of cake or some chocolate every single day (well, maybe that was because I did not eat any bread… But it does not matter). The point is: I was trying to choose healthier options over unhealthy alternatives, but was not really doing it.

Now I am up for DOING it finally: to have the body and good health I want I choose to eat SELECTIVELY. 😉

I think it is thanks to the accumulation of necessary knowledge about healthy diet. Plus really feeling and understanding the necessity to finally take care of my body, for I am going to have it for my whole life ahead.

I want to keep it as healthy as possible for as long as possible. I think it deserves to be treated with respect. =)

Getting enough sleep, exercising as well as having a well-organised (stress-free) life are also vital aspects of a healthy lifestyle.
